Background

A children’s hospital tested the VidaShield technology in patient room 425 in the oncology ward.



Method

Two units, A VS02 and a VS03, were installed in the ceiling of the 220 sq. ft. room—patient room 425, which was under positive pressure. Outdoor weather and hallway environmental conditions were different pre- to post-testing. Patient room 425 was terminally cleaned before pre-testing, but was not cleaned before post-testing. The environmental air conditions in surrounding areas (hallways, nurses' station, and elevator lobby) were notably different in pre- to post-testing as well. An independent lab analyzed the samples.



Results

The airborne levels of bacteria in patient room 425 were reduced 86%, and airborne fungi levels were reduced by 44%. Fungi surface level contaminants were reduced by 54%, but the bacteria surface contamination was higher—most likely due to the fact that the room was not terminally cleaned. Fungal samples are most impacted by environmental conditions and inanimate objects brought into the unit; whereas, bacteria levels are often impacted by the people in the area.



Conclusions

The VidaShield system reduced airborne bacteria levels by 86% and fungi levels by 54%. Surface fungi levels were reduced 26%. There was no terminal cleaning performed prior to post-installation testing, as there was in pre-installation testing, which likely contributed to the noted rise in bacteria surface levels.
